Back pain is a representative musculoskeletal disorder that causes significant discomfort in daily life. In Korean Medicine, the lower back is viewed as the “house of the kidneys”, approaching it from the perspective of overall Qi and blood circulation and the balance of the Zang-Fu organs.

Back pain arises from various causes, ranging from structural damage to functional disharmony:

▪️Muscle and Ligament Injury (Lumbar Sprain): A condition where the muscles and ligaments supporting the lower back are micro-torn or strained due to lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, or poor posture.

▪️Herniated Nucleus Pulposus (Herniated Disc): A condition where the disc between the vertebrae herniates and compresses nerves, radiating pain and numbness not only to the lower back but also to the buttocks and legs.

▪️Spinal Stenosis: A condition where the pathway through which the spinal nerves pass narrows due to aging and other factors, compressing the nerves and causing symptoms where the legs feel numb and pull when walking, requiring rest.

▪️Spondylolisthesis: A condition where a vertebra slips forward out of alignment with the bone above or below it, irritating the nerves and causing pain.

Functional Imbalance (Blood Stasis and Phlegm/Fluid Retention): A state where waste products (blood stasis, phlegm) stagnate in the body due to chronic fatigue, coldness, or stress, blocking the circulation of meridians and solidifying the pain.
