Ankle pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems, arising from a range of causes — from a temporary sprain to chronic joint instability and degenerative changes.
▪️ Ankle Sprain: The most common cause, occurring when the ankle rolls inward and damages the outer ligaments (anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, etc.).
▪️ Achilles Tendinitis and Injury: Excessive overload on the tendon connecting the calf muscle to the heel causes inflammation or micro-damage.
▪️ Fracture: A strong impact causes cracks or breaks in bones such as the fibula, tibia, or talus.
▪️ Chronic Ankle Instability: A condition where the ligaments fail to heal properly after an acute sprain, causing the ankle to give way frequently and pain to persist.
▪️ Ankle Arthritis: Repeated trauma or degenerative changes wear down the joint cartilage, causing pain and stiffness.
▪️ Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the nerve on the inside of the ankle causes numbness and pain in the sole of the foot or around the ankle.

In Korean medicine, ankle pain is diagnosed as blood stasis, injury, or a Bi-syndrome (obstruction pattern) caused by blocked Qi-Blood circulation, with treatment aimed at relieving pain and restoring ligament and joint function.
